Job Opening: Parent & Community Coordinator




Reports To: Executive Director






Bright Star Schools is one of the premier charter school organizations in Los Angeles, currently operating two secondary schools (Stella Academy - grades 5 – 8, API 802 - and Bright Star Secondary grades 9 – 12, API 813) that are among the highest performing public schools in Los Angeles. Bright Star Schools plans to open one new middle school per year over the next five years, beginning in 2010/11.




Parent / Community Coordinator: The Parent & Community Coordinator (“PCC”) leads the organization’s efforts in several distinct areas:




1) Recruiting & Enrollment


2) Community Affairs


3) Parent Liaison


4) Parent Education




Recruiting & Enrollment: Bright Star must maintain a year-round community outreach and education effort to recruit, enroll, and retain students. The PCC will be responsible for all facets of the Recruiting & Enrollment process, including but not limited to:





• Preparation of marketing materials for student recruiting


• Establishment of relationships with community groups to aid recruiting efforts (churches, neighborhood councils, etc.)


• Outbound marketing and recruiting activity including speaking engagements, direct mail, door-to-door grassroots marketing efforts, etc.


• Coordination of Open Houses for prospective students at both of our campuses


• Development of efficient enrollment process that includes placement testing, proper documentation processes, and comprehensive student/family orientation to the school


• Conduct of exit interviews and documentation for students who leave the schools for any reason


• Preparation, administration and tabulation of student and parent semi-annual surveys


• Development of efficient re-enrollment process (in conjunction with school staff)




Community Affairs: Bright Star seeks to increase its profile in the local communities we serve in order to martial public support for our programs, increase local fundraising opportunities, and generate greater student/family interest in our schools. Community Affairs activities will include:




• Liaison (with Executive Director) to community groups including neighborhood councils, city council offices, LAPD, local social service providers (for establishing a referral network)




Parent Liaison: Bright Star’s Academic and Enrichment Parent Group (a.k.a. “the parent group”) was developed to coordinate parent and school activities, to improve communication between the school and families, and to coordinate the tracking of parent volunteer hours. The PCC will work with the leaders of the parent group to ensure that the mission and work of the parent group is properly aligned with that of the schools. Specific responsibilities will include:




• Act as a liaison/moderator between parents and the school over issues of conflict


• Provide appropriate support and resources to the parent group to ensure that it meets its commitment to coordinate parent volunteer hours


• Work with the leaders of the parent group to define annual goals, conduct local fundraising activity, etc.




Parent Education: Bright Star seeks to develop a parent education curriculum that addresses a variety of topics of interest to our parent community: college readiness, financial literacy, paying for college, etc. Specific responsibilities will include:




• The PCC will work with the parent group to define the scope and breadth of the parent education curriculum.


• Coordination of parent education program including organizing materials, speakers, venue, etc. for monthly parent education meetings.






Qualifications:




Minimum:


1. College degree


2. Spanish / English language fluency a must


3. At least two years working in a school environment or as a community organizer


4. Evidence of strong organizational and interpersonal skills


5. Desire to be a team player






Commitment:




The time commitment for this position is Monday – Friday 1:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. The PCC will also be required to attend or participate in evening or weekend programs (recruiting opportunities, seminars, parent education opportunities), averaging about five evenings and five weekend days per month. This is a year-round position consisting of 250 work days per year (2 weeks vacation plus holidays.)






Salary and Benefits:




Salary range for the Parent & Community Coordinator is based on experience.




Salary: Negotiable, DOE


Status: Full Time (see details above)


Location: Los Angeles, CA (Mid-City Area: Adams & La Brea)
