Ki ho'alu is so sweet.
A lot of Hawaii's musical appeal can be traced directly to ki ho'alu, or a slack-key style of guitar playing that is indigenous to the islands. It is a loosening of the strings so as to sound a pleasant chord tone when openly strummed. Ki ho'alu is a finger-picking method that evolved from this tuning.
Southern California Slack-key Festival
On January 24, 2010, at the Redondo Beach Performing Arts Center we can watch and listen to ki ho'alu being performed by some of the masters of the style.
Cyril Pahinui and his Pahinui Hawaiian Band, Ledward Kaapana, Jeff Peterson, Makana, Jim "Kimo" West, Al Yankovic, and favorite island entertainer, John Cruz will all be a part of this festival. Local Southern California Hula troupes (halaus) will also share their skills.
Show time is from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM. An Island Marketplace with vendors and food booths will be open at 11:00 AM.
