The plan? All proposals are due to the district by January 11th. The applications will be reviewed by board members, parents, teachers, and in some cases, even students. Superintendent Cortines will make the final recommendations in February, the Board of Education will vote, and official control will be granted to the winning agencies for Fall 2010.
Sounds simple enough, but not so fast. Amidst all of the shuffling heralds the reformer from New York, Joan Sullivan. Right before the Christmas holiday, Mayor Villaraigosa announced Sullivan as the new Los Angeles Deputy Mayor of Education, a new post that was created to oversee the functions of the Los Angeles Department of Education. Sullivan is credited with turning around the South Bronx School District in New York and has gained particular notoriety for increasing parent participation. Villaraigosa created this new position by restructuring the administrative hierarchy in the Los Angeles public education system. Sullivan comes with years of experience and a good track record, but in the grueling battle for our student's futures, so much hinges on the crucial decisions that will be made in the coming months.
The teachers are caught in the crossfire between the failing schools and grab-bag style education policy. Cortines has voiced his support for the teacher’s bid, but with a warning that they are going to have a lot to prove to be considered for the job. In the meantime, while we wait to see where the pieces fall, the atmosphere is tense. The students know that there is a lot at stake and while the political circus rages on for control of their schools, they have no choice but to anxiously wait to see if they will be sacrificed or saved.
The Los Angeles based non-profit, Children Uniting Nations, is set to launch a collaborative mentoring campaign in celebration of National Mentoring Month in January. Children Uniting Nations is an organization that is dedicated to providing role models for at-risk youth and foster children. These mentors are reliable adults who are able to provide a child with guidance, support, and encouragement to succeed in school and life. CUN is a model program that has been identified as a national leader in providing effective and successful mentoring programs for children in need.
Children Uniting Nations has partnered with four local organizations to launch a collaborative effort for large-scale recruiting of mentors for youth in the greater Los Angeles area. CUN is partnering with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater LA, Los Angeles Cares Mentoring Movement, Catholic Big Brothers Big Sisters, and Jewish Big Brothers Big Sisters to raise awareness, encourage people to participate, and recruit mentors for the thousands of kids on waiting lists to receive a mentor. Mentoring events and activities are slated to take place throughout the month of January, including a press conference at City Hall on January 6th and the Multi-Faith Movement taking place in various churches and synagogues throughout LA from January 15-17. January 21st is “Thank Your Mentor Day” in which people are encouraged to reach out to honor and thank the people who served as role models in their own lives.
